Day #4 Oahu Grand Island Circle Tour - a whale, a sunset, a doll plantation and a wind to lookout for

We were nearly at the top of the island, near Laie, and we were able to stop at this place as our bus was small, it was down a narrow side street.

The rock out there in the water had a hole in it, and a stone in that hole, making the whole thing look like the head of a giant whale peaking up over the surface.

Do you feel like someone is watching us?

It was so nice to have the sea breeze, I decided to explore the rocks a bit, hoping for a cave.

Or at least a peek over the edge

The waves crashing against the rocks

Going in the bus
Coming off the bus

Sunset Beach.
this is where they hold at this time of year an International Professional Surfing competition.
The waves are humungous

But not today.

It was still awesome though, I got to paddle at Sunset Beach.
A slightly bigger wave whooshed up the beach just after this shot, and soaked some of the innocent bus members standing by.

We continued on. There was talk of a doll plantation. We were kind of excited
until we realised this sea of spikey green were pineapple plants
and it was actually called Dole Plantation. Darn.
We would not recommend sky diving into this area - ouch.

Mmm, despite the lack of toys to our design, they did sell some very yummy soft serve icecream - pineapple flavour of course.

We were heading back to Honolulu, Waikiki and our Hotel, but had enough time to fulfill one location we had skipped earlier on in the day.

Nuuanu Pali Lookout.
There is a gap in the mountain range, and this gap allows for all the wind (well most of it I reckon) from the Windward side (east) of the island to get through to the west, without having to get over the mountain.

We were sheltered here

Hold on to your hats, it was ultra windy, but the view was spectacular.
That is Kailua in the distance.

It was almost strong enough to hold me up, well Catherine was holding on to my legs just in case.

We had read about this area before we came on our holiday.
The islanders in the late 1700's were at war, and part of the battle took place here where the soldiers were forced off the cliffs to their deaths. Maybe it wasn't very windy that day.

It was almost 5.30pm by the time we got back to our hotel
We had a great time didn't we?
Yes. If we ever get to come back what would you like to see again, or do different?
Hmmm, I think we need to snorkel at Hanauma Bay.
The thing we were supposed to do on Thursday.
Yes.
And a bigger tour of Kualoa Ranch, and go to that Polynesian Cultural Center.
Ooh and maybe go swimming at some of the beaches we passed, and what was that little town before the pineapples?
Haleiwa, there on the map, what was there?
An icecream shop.
Yum!
