The making of Mariana - and the part goes to..

My Josefina is a little older than my other American Girls, (she is a Pleasant Company doll and was released in 1997 so she is at least 17 years old by release date, I haven't made her to be quite that old) and she does feel a little bit lonely, even though she is fully included in anything that goes on, if she wishes to. So I was feeling the need to create a friend in doll form for her. So the search began.  It would have to be an older doll, as in either a Pleasant Company or early Mattel doll, but which one?

When browsing Josefina's information in Wikia, I came across reference to a friend of Josefina's called Mariana . She appears in the book "Happy Birthday, Josefina."
I have ordered the book to find out more.

Based on Wikia:
Mariana is a Pueblo Indian.

I have never heard that term before. What does Pueblo mean? Being a total ignoramous I only ever thought of Indians from North America to live in teepees and hunt with bow and arrow, and that they were nomadic.

So I googled asking what Pueblo meant..

pueblo
ˈpwɛbləʊ/
noun: pueblo; plural noun: pueblos; noun: Pueblo; plural noun: Pueblo; plural noun: Pueblos
  1. 1.

a town or village in Spain, Latin America, or the south-western US, especially an American Indian settlement.
  2. 2.

a member of any of various American Indian peoples, including the Hopi, occupying pueblo settlements chiefly in New Mexico and Arizona.
adjective
adjective: Pueblo; adjective: pueblo
  1. 1.

relating to or denoting the Pueblo or their culture.
    "the Pueblo people"

Wikipedia was also consulted "The name Pueblo originated with the Spanish explorers, who referred to their particular style of villages. It means "village" in Spanish."
"They lived in a range of structures, including pit houses, pueblos, and cliff dwellings designed so that they could lift entry ladders during enemy attacks, which provided security."
"Their traditional ecomony is based on agriculture and trade."

Wow, and the pictures of their villages are amazing, although manmade are not with modern machinery.
So I plan to find out more.

My decision to make a Mariana is definitely not unique. Doll Diaries did Throwback Thursday, January 22nd 2015, and lo and behold there is Mariana by Carol M!!  ah so pretty, the one shoulder cotton dress called a Manta over the Missionary inspired white under dress, and even the hair done up in butterfly whorls, I am so impressed.

Guess who arrived on Wednesday?

Prioritoes

Kaya, with her original dress, a hat, a glove, a shoe and a white belly/back warmer

her hair is a mess

but she's beautiful all the same

the benefit of velcro was known even back then

Pleasant Company 2002
I was not quite sure how long her previous carer had had her, it appears after googling about that Kaya can be bought even now with the Pleasant company 2002 on her neck - when PC was bought out by Mattel in the late 1990's, So her real age is unknown, but I thought to go by the 2002.

When first seeing the Kaya doll, like ages ago, I had always thought her face mold made her look like she was on the verge of tears, I am since aware that she was made with the thought in mind that it was offensive in her Nez Perce culture to bare ones teeth. She is in fact smiling though, and it is very pleasant, and peaceful

especially when she is sleeping
